Preparing the Environment: (What
has to be done to set the stage? Where and when will you conduct the lesson?)
This activity doesn’t require a great
deal of preparation. All the teacher has to do is print off a few copies of the
hand washing poster and make a copy of the hand washing song. She needs to
place the posters around the walls of the classroom prior to the activity. This
lesson can be conducted in any room with a computer (that will be used to play
the song).
V. Procedure (Write exactly what you will do
or say in a step by step manner)

Motivation: Teacher will begin the activity by asking: “Does anyone know how
to stop spreading germs?”
|
The
students parent/guardian will listen to the teacher and then answer the question that he/she
asked.
|
|
2.
The teacher will say: “We can stop spreading germs by washing our hands a
lot. Does anyone know when we should wash our hands?”
|
The
students parent/guardian will listen to the teacher and then answer the question that he/she
asked.
|
|
3.
The teacher will say: “We need to wash our hands before we eat, after we eat,
and when we enter the classroom. We also need to wash our hands after we blow
our noses. Does anyone know how you are supposed to wash your hands?” After
she listens to a few answers, she will ask the children to pretend that they
are washing their hands and show her how they do it.
|
The
students parent/guardian will listen to the teacher and then answer the question that he/she
asked.
When
prompted, the children parent/guardian will pretend that they are washing their hands in
order to show the teacher how they currently wash up.
|
|
4.
The teacher will say: “Most of you have it right. In order to wash our hands
correctly we must follow these six steps. (Note: Before beginning with the
poster ask the children to follow along with the poster and use their hands
to practice the hand washing steps as he/she read them.) She/he will then
point to the hand washing poster. She will read each step as she points to
the picture on the poster.
|
The
children parent/guardian will follow along the poster with the teacher and use their hands to
practice the appropriate hand washing steps as they move through the poster.
|
|
5.
The teacher will say: “Now that we know how to wash our hands, let’s sing a
song to help us memorize how it’s done.” The teacher will then put on the
hand washing song.
|
The
children parent/guardian will sing along with the song.
|
|
6.
The teacher will say: “Did you all like the song? Do you think it will help
you remember to wash your hands? Do you want to sing it one more time to help
you remember?” The teacher will then play the song one more time.
|
The
children parent/guardian will be responsible for answering the teacher’s questions and then
singing along with the song.
|
|
7.
Closure: The teacher will say: “Let’s review how to wash our hands. What’s
the first step? The second step? The third step? The fourth step? The fifth
step? The sixth step? Now, when and why should we wash our hands?” When all
of the questions have been answered the teacher will say: “Wow, all of you
guys are now expert hand washers…Good Job!!!!”
|
The
children parent/guardian will be responsible for answering the teacher’s questions.

At Home Activity Plan Adaptation:
This lesson will be really easy for parents to do with their children at home. The easiest thing to do is have a copy of the song on hand either in CD form or on your MP3 player so you can sing the song with your children in the car or sitting at home. Also, when you and your child are singing the song please remind your child to pretend to wash their hands, so they can get some extra practice going through the proper hand washing steps. It would also be helpful to post a copy of the hand washing poster above the sink or on the refrigerator. Post it anywhere your child will see it regularly that way they get constant visual reminders on how to properly wash their hands. Also, please remember to be a good role model for your children. If your children see that you know how to wash your hands correctly they are more likely to do so themselves. Your children are always watching you!
I have also provided a copy of the Gel-Mo on the Go Storybook below. Please read it with your children because it will provide further reinforcement on this topic.
