There is no preparation that is needed for this lesson. This lesson doesn’t require any special equipment or any special set up time. This lesson can be conducted anywhere there are tables and chairs for the students to sit and work at.

  V. Procedure (Write exactly what you will do or say in a step by step manner)

Teacher Will:

Child & Parent/Guardian Will:

1. Motivation: The teacher will say: “Does anyone know what poisons are?” She will wait for the children to respond. She will then say: “Does anyone know where poisons can be found?”

The child and parent/guardian will listen to the teacher and respond to her questions.

2. The teacher will say: “Poisons are substances that we shouldn’t eat because they can make us sick. They are sometimes tricky to spot because some poisons smell good, but you must stay away from them. Can anyone think of an example of a poison?”

The child parent/guardian will listen to the teacher and respond to her question.

3. The teacher will say: “Poisons are things like cleaning products, some plants, gasoline, cigarettes, shaving creams, and many other household items. What are some examples of non-poisonous things that you can eat?”

The child parent/guardian will listen to the teacher and respond to her questions.

4. The teacher will say: “Non-poisonous things include foods such as oranges, apples, candy, chocolate, vegetables, and meat. Now that we have a little knowledge about poisons, we are going to try to identify poisonous substances that we shouldn’t eat. I’m going to hold up a card and you guys need to tell me whether it’s safe to eat or not. Do you guys understand what we are going to do? Are you ready to get started?”

The child parent/guardian will listen to the teacher’s directions and ask any necessary questions.

5. The teacher will then hold up the first card and say: “Is this safe to eat or not?” The teacher will allow the children to answer correctly before moving on to the next card. The teacher may also ask questions like, “Why is it not safe to eat?” The teacher will allow the students to answer all of the questions before moving on to the remainder of the cards. The teacher will proceed through the entire deck in the same manner as he/she did the first card.

The children parent/guardian will tell the teacher whether each picture depicts are poisonous substance or not. They will also answer all of the teacher’s questions.

6. Once the teacher finishes the deck he/she will pass out the coloring page. The teacher will say: “In front of you there is a coloring page. Please color the items that you can eat and circle the ones that you can’t eat.” The teacher will then allow the children to work on the coloring page.

The child parent/guardian will be responsible for completing the coloring page and asking any necessary questions or asking for help when needed.

7. Once the children have finished the coloring page the teacher will say: “Now that we have finished the page can anyone tell me the things on the page that is safe to eat? Can anyone tell me the things that are NOT safe to eat?” The teacher will allow the students to answer her questions.

The child parent/guardian will be responsible for answering all of the teacher’s questions and participating in the group discussion.

At Home Activity Adaptation:

This activity can be done easily at home with your children. The best way to complete this activity at home is to take your child through each room in your house. Have the child identify three poisons and three non-poisons in each room. Also have them justify their answers. You should give help when necessary.

As an added safety precaution parents should always use the proper child proofing techniques, such as having childproof locks on cabinets that contain harmful poisons. Parents can also keep harmful poisons out of the house, which keeps them out of the reach of children.
